Kastel Fortress

Kastel Fortress is the oldest historical monument in the city of Banja Luka. It is located in the central part of the city, commanding the left bank of the Vrbas River.

There are no reliable records regarding the exact time of the creation of this structure. However, many circumstances suggest that the site was originally a Roman settlement called Castra. The Romans were frequently exposed to attacks from barbarian tribes, and they had strong reasons to defend the road that passed through the Vrbas valley. Supporting these claims are archaeological findings discovered in the area of today's Kastel, including Roman ceramics, coins, and construction materials. During the medieval Bosnian state, there existed a Vrbas Town, which, according to one assumption, was located at the site of today's Kastel. The intensive construction of Kastel began in the penultimate decade of the 15th century, during the Turkish occupation and the rule of Ferhad Pasha Sokolović.

Today, the Kastel Fortress is a Category I monument. The fortress is surrounded on all sides by thick stone walls, and inside, besides the summer stage, there is also the Stone House serving as a gallery.

Within the walls of the Kastel Fortress on the Vrbas River bank, you'll find the "Kazamat" restaurant, which represents the historical core of the city of Banja Luka. This is one of the oldest restaurants in Banja Luka and an ideal place for visitors to unwind after exploring the Kastel Fortress and other attractions in the city.

They told her that he wasn't right for her because he was a soldier and could be sent to the farthest reaches of the Turkish empire at any moment. Their love continued to grow day by day until Omer and his army were deployed to the battlefield. Safikada vowed eternal love and loyalty to Omer. Unfortunately, one day, news of his death reached Banja Luka. When the news finally reached Safikada, she put on her wedding dress and stood in front of the cannon atop the Kastel Fortress, which marked noon. With the cry, "I am faithful to him!" she died, becoming a symbol of boundless love and loyalty.
